Motorcycle enthusiasts to take over Margate for the 6th Africa Bike Week

Africa Bike Week 2014, the largest free motorcycle rally in South Africa, is taking place for the 6thconsecutive year, from Thursday 1 May to Sunday 4 May, in Margate, KwaZulu-Natal. Thousands of bike enthusiasts are attracted to the event every year to enjoy an array of activities for the whole family – so parents don’t have to worry about little Georgie asking why the “tannie” is removing her bra.

Bill Davidson, the great-grandson of co-founder William A. Davidson and the son of William G. “Willie G.” Davidson visited South Africa for the first time last year to attend Africa Bike Week.

Harley-Davidson Africa organises the event, but all flavours of bikes and bikers are welcome. Margate transforms into a motorcycle-friendly town for the four days and visitors can expect to see thousands of people and bikes on Beach Road during the weekend. Attractions include Harley-Davidson’s ‘Jump Start’ – a Harley fixed on rollers, there for anyone who wants to get the feeling of riding a big cruiser without being concerned with balancing or steering.

The Harley-Davidson Riding Academy will be there for those who want to take it a step further and learn to ride too. Demo rides will also be available to riders who want to try the latest Harley-Davidson models and there’s a Ride-In Bike Show, open to all customised bikes. The categories include Freestyle Custom, Modified Harley-Davidson, Café Bike and Peoples’ Choice.

Visitors can also expect to see Harley-Davidson dealers, exhibition tents, 2014 Harley-Davidson models, family entertainment and an aftermarket village. One of the main attractions is the mass ride that will take place on Sunday morning, where thousands of bikes are expected to ride a 34 km circular route.

The organisers say a great entertainment line-up will keep visitors rocking well into the night. Some of the performers who will take to the stage during the weekend include Dozi, Nova Rise, Madison Band and DJ Fistaz Mixwell.

This years special envoy from H-D headquarters in Milwaukee is Mark-Hans Richer, Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer for Harley-Davidson Motor Company. Hans is responsible for motorcycle product planning, the Harley Owners Group (H.O.G.), the Harley-Davidson Museum and retail operations world wide. Here’s your chance to suggest a range of superchargers as after-market equipment.

Harley-Davidson has again partnered with the Hibiscus Coast Municipality, UGU Municipality, South Coast Tourism, Jack Daniels, Carling Black Label, Jeep and Shelly Centre to make Africa Bike Week possible.
