BOOK NOW! The Cederberg Adventure Tour – 3 days

The Cederberg region is a South African treasure, loved by adventure bikers, rock climbers and explorers. Join us us on a 3-day motorcycle tour from Stellenbosch to the treasures of the Cederberg, from 11 to 13 December.

This tour is for adventure motorcycles. For this route we recommend tyres with an off-road bias, or knobblies.

Tour dates: 11 to 13 December 2020 (3 days & 2 nights)
Group size: Approximately 15
Departure point: Pot Belly Coffee Shop, Klapmuts, Western Cape

Day 1: Fri 11 Dec. Klapmuts to Cederberg Oasis

Departure 12:00 | Arrival 15:00 | Distance: 190 km
Afternoon excursion: Stadsaal caves – 22 km round trip

We meet at Pot Belly in Klapmuts (near Stellenbosch and Paarl) at 11:30 on the Friday, to depart just after 12:00. To ease ourselves into the weekend, we’ll only ride a leisurely 190 km today. From Klapmuts we ride to Ceres. We turn north on the R303, pass through Prince Alfred Hamlet and ascend Gydo Pass.

We keep going north until we turn right after Op die Berg. The road turns to the north, and changes from tar to gravel. Here the peace and beauty of the Cederberg region will begin to envelop you! At Cederberg Oasis you will be assigned a sturdy tent (stretcher and bedding included), before we take an 11 km ride to the Stadsaal caves. We return to Cederberg Oasis for dinner around 19:30.
Coffee stop: Tremor Coffee Bar, Ceres

Day 2: Sat 12 Dec. Wupperthal, Eselbank and the CAO

Departure 09:00 | Arrival 15:00 | Distance: 240 km
Evening excursion: Cederberg Astronomical Observatory – 34 km round trip

Today our journey starts and ends at Cederberg Oasis. We ride towards Clanwilliam, passing through an ancient valley, while mostly riding gravel roads. In Clanwilliam we turn onto the R364, which meanders in a north-easterly direction, before we turn off towards Wupperthal.

Time permitting, we ride to Uitspankraal and back before continuing to Wupperthal. On the outskirts of the town we ascend a spectacular pass and ride to Eselbank. From this town, that seems forgotten by the world, we make our way back to Cederberg Oasis.

Night riders to the observatory
Those who wish to gaze at the stars through the CAO’s telescopes, may have an early dinner to leave Oasis by 19:15. The presentation starts at 20:00, and we leave from the observatory at around 21:00, to reach Oasis by 21:30.

Day 3: Sun 13 Dec. Cederberg Oasis to Klapmuts

Departure 09:30 | Arrival 15:00 | Distance: 300 km

Leaving Cederberg Oasis, we follow the previous day’s route at first, but turn towards Citrusdal. Here we join the R303, ride Middelberg Pass (gravel) and continue all the way to Op die Berg. Then we retrace our steps to Ceres and the Bain’s Kloof Pass, where we take a break at the Calabash Bush Pub. From here it’s a short ride before we disband at the Pot Belly Coffee Shop in Klapmuts.
